GitHub (my employer), just published a fascinating post on the scale and distribution of git events we are observing (snapshot from August 2026), along side an introduction to the changes we are making. I highly recommend reading the entire post.

I am a bit of chart nerd, and, to my mind at least, the chart included in the article fails to highlight the scale of activity differences we are seeing between P75, P99, P99.9 and P100. I have extracted out the numbers directly from the post. They tell a story directly.

Event type P25 P50 P75 P99 P99.9 P99.99 P100
Fetches 1 2 8 739 10,534 214,934 514,300,000
Pushes 2 4 15 802 7,502 23,758 2,970,000
Clones 1 3 5 283 5,619 44,691 279,300,000
Requests (all) 15 25 53 7,738 80,978 570,771 1,001,000,000

Chart wise, using a logarithmic scale and just looking at P99, P99.9 and P100 we can see just how steep the curve is.
